One Heart

Betty said, "With the binoculars, it sure looks crowded."

"It does," agreed Noah.

"They look like they have their noses in each other's bums."

"I never thought of it that way."

"It must be hard to park."

"Right. Not like in a parking lot."

"I would probably get yelled at."

"If you went through what it takes to have a boat and be out there, you'd do fine."

"I don't know what I want to do, but I'm pretty sure fishing isn't it."

"Sometimes it makes me sad."

"What does?"

"These boats. I love the way they look. I love to see 'em. And I have a feeling they will disappear."

"You're right. That's sad."

Having exhausted their feelings on the topic, the two teenagers went to get burgers for lunch. They ate outside, under a small bunch of gulls that kept hovering and calling out like lost souls. This so affected Noah and Betty that eventually, before they had even eaten half of their burgers, they threw the rest over the fence and then left as the gulls began landing and squabbling over the unexpected gift.

"Let's go up on the rocks by the lighthouse," said Betty.

"Good idea," said Noah, who felt of a sudden as if their hearts were one, "we'll feel better by the sea."
