When I Try the Door and It Opens

When I try the door and it opens
And sometimes it needs a tug
There’s a scene in my heart that looks like this
Somewhere along the Granite Coast
With the wind off the ocean bringing
Great Expanse’s spaciousness in
And casting small mind out.
I need to remember that door
Because sometimes it swings shut
And a longing settles in on me
That I know nothing about.
I forget I am loved.
All my songs begin vying
With the mourning dove
That seems to know
When I will wake and always
Perches on the roof outside my window.
Yes sadness can be beautiful
But if I had my wish
That door would never leave my mind
And I would never finish being kind
And letting joyful kindness overflow.
