The Last Observatory

Because of its unsurpassed elevation, the war had left it intact. There was no power, because the generator had run out of fuel, therefore nothing in the building worked, and so the only observing was being done from the outside, at the lookout. Those who remained and were capable of the ascent set their tripods at the edge of the fence but seemed reluctant to take any pictures.

“Well, the clouds are very nice,” said one.

“Yes,” said another, “but it’s even nicer to have something to go with the clouds.”

“Yes,” sighed the first, “yes, it would be.”
