Once Was A Dock
Why does the truth that nothing lasts make us unhappy? If things lasted, there would be no room for anything to change. Here in my village, scarcely any sign remains of the bustling fishing industry that once made the place hum. Instead of a harbour ringed with fishing stages, there's one. Instead of docks where the fish came in, there's mainly docks where day sailors go out. It's very quiet. The children who grow up here can't wait to get out and go somewhere more lively. At the same time, in this time when illness has much of the world housebound, here one can slip out to sea, out to the vast sea with its freshest of airs that one can breathe without wearing a mask. Of course the time will come when one can only slip out when the heart stops. And then we can rise up and join the soaring flight to somewhere else. We can do that. The truth of impermanence can set us free. Aren't you glad?
