His Delight in the Light
The occasion matters only secondarily.
I mean what he's doing or is being done.
Hauling a boat, burying a loved one,
arriving at the end of a voyage
at the wrong destination
it's the play of light takes the lead.
The sunrise on the painted deck,
the sunset on the burnished coffin,
the way the unknown country's flag
has flown for so long, grown so thin
it's really only the light shining through
that he sees with a child's thorough
attention and undying love.
