Four Moments of a Fawn
I did the hour drive for groceries, from the village into the nearest shopping centre and back, and took my camera bag with me, because you never know what you might see. I once photographed an eagle at an intersection in town as it flew over my car, disregarding the red light. Not today, though. It was foggy on the way in and uninteresting on the way back. Then as I pulled into my driveway, I saw a fawn peering into the Japanese knotweed hedge that separates my property from the children's playground next door. It didn't hear me, I think, because it was listening to something on the other side of the hedge. The first photo caught it in that act. By the second one it had gone from listening intently to hearing precisely. In the third, you can see it contemplating what to do next. At the moment of the fourth, the riding mower the city sends to mow the playground roared into life and the fawn made the decision to exit. I didn't notice the progression particularly as I was shooting - I was just trying to get in all the shots I could - but in processing it became clear. So I'm presenting all four shots here so you can follow the mind of a fawn. Which is not a chance you get everyday, eh?
