Don Chambers on His Beach w sig DSC_2010
The Sturdy Cloth of Which Nova Scotia Is Cut
Don Chambers worked a large part of his life as a miner. "Where the weather never changes." Now he grows blueberries and keeps cattle and checks the weather every day. For many years, to find work, he was forced to move away to British Columbia. Now he's back on the Bay of Fundy near his childhood home. Here he's about to show me the rock he fished from as a boy. Before I leave, he and his wife Lorraine load us up with tomatoes, string beans, garlic, beets and cucumbers from their garden. He says it changes your world when you help people. A tough man and a kind one, a thoughtful man and a generous one, a man who has overcome hardship without preying on others, and an engaging storyteller. Don Chambers, the sturdy cloth of which Nova Scotia is cut.
