Everything Keeping Company

This business of being alone is a fiction. Today the fog was thick all day in Prospect. But it was better to be out in it than not. I was on the skidway working on the boat. I caught myself heaving a sigh and realized I was thinking of people I wished I was with. Thinking. Thinking. Thinking. Then, as I made my way carefully back up the skidway, I noticed this wild rose greenery and lichen growing on wet granite, and realized that everything is always keeping everything else company. Obsessed with thinking that company must be human, we miss that. Imagining that we are alone, we cause ourselves pain. But it isn't necessary. The sky is sitting singing on our shoulders and the ground politely holding up our feet. They have been with us all our lives. They are family. Everywhere our family is greeting us. How can we greet them back and appreciate them? Simply by resting a little every day and letting our thoughts go their own way and resting in our nature beyond thoughts. I mean, that was first, right? We are, and then we think. But first we just are. And everything is with us. What better heritage could there be? No matter who comes or goes, we are never alone. So we could cheer up. We could cheer up immensely. That could become our forever experience, being together with our forever family, loving and being loved.
