Mugo, You Know?

Climbing out of my car after a trip to the city and the farmers market, I enjoy being greeted by this sprawling mugo pine and the algae-crowned roof of the shed in my neighbour's backyard against clouds. Mugos, I find out from wikipedia, are not native to Nova Scotia. No. Nor even to low-lying climates at all. They originate in the Alps! And here they are now by the sea. This one has been here 30 years and was a shrub I could put my arms around when I came. I have planted more because the deer won't eat them, as well as because I like their company.
