Back Bay Autumnal Splendour for web DSC_5677
Back Bay Bounty
It was the sort of day where, inside or out, there seems to be no relief. Outside it was foggy, cold and drizzling rain. Inside I had run up against a wall. I wanted to buy Christmas gifts for my son and grandson in Germany but was unable due to technical difficulties and had become so frustrated I couldn't sit in front of the computer a minute longer. So I chose the inclement weather as the lesser of two evils. Soon enough I was doubting my choice. As the boat ghosted along through the fog in the harbour, so much rain began to fall that I had to put the camera away and just pay attention to where I was going. The open ocean was out of the question as a destination because the fog was so thick out there I would have been lost immediately. The alternative, which I took, was to skirt Redmond's island, staying close enough to keep visual contact, and go poke around in the back bay where I couldn't be lost for long without bumping into something. Then fortune smiled. While putting around in the very shallow water at the head of the bay, I was greeted by the sun. It didn't stay out long, and by the time I headed back it had gone away again and left me smothered in gray. But for a blessed interval the diffuse light was a feast for the eyes and the back bay islands yielded up their beauty.
Can't close the story out without mentioning that in the middle of the night I woke up doubting that I had tied the boat up correctly to the dock on my return. This after remarking to my son in Texas that evening, via Messenger, that I did sometimes wake up with that very doubt in mind. Of course I got up and dressed and got a flashlight and went out in the drizzling dark and of course the boat was a textbook illustration of being properly made fast. And now it is morning and I've not had enough sleep.
But I have some good pictures. And the comfortable knowledge that I salvaged a wreck of a day. With the blessing, of course, of Lady Luck. Thank you, Lady.
