Not Alone

I live alone. Neither wife nor companion. The ocean is my usual friend. But today as I rowed back in, my neighbour was right behind me in his motorboat with a load of kids. As I was hauling my boat into the boathouse, because it is going to rain, he was offloading the children at my dock and they were swarming everywhere. I was putting the finishing touches to the putaway job when a little girl like a Latin Shirley Temple, classic curls and pretty angel face and all, came running into the boathouse to ask me a hundred questions about my boat that has no motor. I had answered about two of them when she dashed back out. And then before I knew it she had dashed back in again and was hugging me, saying, "I didn't want to leave you without saying goodbye."

We're not only not alone. We're sometimes so together it can break your heart.
