Out of the Blue

We have a saying about something unexpected, that it just came "out of the blue". To me, my whole life has been like that. Sometimes it seems very dreamlike, other times the dream gets punctured by a sadness so sharp that tears spill through the wound. Last night I watched a movie with my oldest son. Though he is more than a thousand miles away, he made this happen with available technology. We texted back and forth with comments about the actors and so forth. It made us happy to spend the virtual time with each other. Afterward I saw a post by his mother of him as a child wearing a straw hat with giant rabbit ears because he insisted costumes were required for Easter. And I remembered I wasn't there that Easter, virtually or otherwise. Or for the rest of his childhood. And then, just like that, out of the blue...
