A Perspective on Being Separate
Sand seen closely with a glass
is just a heap of smaller stuff.
Each particle could claim
a kingdom of its own.
The universe seen with a telescope
is just the same, or the world
from space observed
with its kingdoms already at war.
So looking through a camera lens
I see a glacier overshadow a mountain
that is dwarfing the shore
of an iceberg lagoon
and I wonder just how big is all that
until I spot a white coat and a red
and have those distant hikers to thank
for adding perspective.
We have all sorts of names
for telling things apart
and for putting them back together
a few more that will serve
but in a sandstorm who remembers
anything about a name?
