The Bridge

Memory’s camera
Makes some aspects clear
While others remain ill-defined.
Nothing is quite as it was.
And she, whose hand was warm in mine
Whose boots drove deep in crusty snow
Until I took her on my back
She is not there at all. Nor I.
The bridge though, in my mind’s eye,
Is still bearably beautiful
So I remember it
From time to time.
