Pheasant in the Snow DSC_0964

Senses of the Wild
This female pheasant was across the yard. I was in my house, behind a window, a good twenty yards away. It was snowing. It wasn't possible she could see me. Yet she knew I was there. She had been using her talons to dig through the snow and into the ground to unearth food. Yet as I watched her she stopped and turned. She knew. She was completely and startlingly aware, all in a moment. And I could feel it. I could feel her feeling me. It was like a small almost undetectable electric current flowing between us. I sorted through my various shots of her till I found one that I felt illustrated that electric inexplicable awareness. Please never under-estimate the wild. Or fail to protect and preserve it. Not only for ourselves but for those who come after. Because we are less without them.
