Awkward Takeoff of an Ungainly Bird
When underwater, the cormorant is an extremely efficient predator, streamlined and graceful. When taking to the air, on the other hand, this seabird always seems to be on a trial run, like the Wright Brothers trying out an early version of their airplane. One wonders how they become airborne at all, with such a desparate flapping of wings and such a long slow ascent.
