Geese and Goslings DSC_7617
Unbearable Compassion
I took this photo yesterday, over in an inlet in East Dover. I say that by means of apologising that I have no photo for my story today. There is a connection, sadly. Here the geese are together with their goslings. This morning I had gone around Betty's Island and ducked into an inlet on the east side and was just pondering the great beauty of the age-old granite and the tenacious trees and the like there, when I saw a tiny gosling no larger than these in the photo, paddling around all by itself. No siblings, no mommy, no daddy in sight. And it registered all in a bang, this little thing is lost and going to die and there is nothing I can do. Then I went through the check list. No, there was no way I could save it. So I just watched it for a few minutes, zigging and zagging erratically, and then quietly motored away past it back out to open sea.
Oh, the poor wee thing.
