The Woman Who Wouldn't
"Cousin Minnie," said Noah, "why are we here in East Dover? I thought you were going to drive me to Peggy's cove, where I can take pictures of boats."
Cousin Minnie sat looking through the windshield. The glass was clear where the arc of the wipers had cut through the coating of sea salt yesterday's windstorm had deposited. The house up the hill looked abandoned, with no smoke coming from the chimney on a frigid February day and no tire tracks advancing into the narrow and icy dirt driveway between the leafless bushes, as if this end of the road were just a place for cars to turn around.
"I'm going to, honey," replied Minnie. "I just...I just...well, I had heard there was a woman living here who, who won't..."
"Who won't what?" said the boy. He had his camera in his hands and was flicking the lever back and forth that turned it on and off.
"Who just won't," Minnie said. "She won't buy what the world's selling. If it's a car, or a husband, or a cell phone, or ... or you name it, she has her own way of thinking about it. I read a story about her in the paper. I thought I might like to meet her."
"Oh," sighed Noah. "Well, that will take a while. Grown-ups always take a while. It takes a while to say hello, and then a great big while to get their business done, and then another unbearable while to say goodbye. And it's already afternoon. I guess that's it for boats today.
