Lying In Wait For Nothing At All

When I was a boy I liked to make up adventures. Given a stick and a field of thistles, I was a warrior on a battlefield mowing down the enemy. I find the tendency has never gone away. Yesterday I rowed my rowing/sailing vessel all the way to the end of the back bay and backed it into the creek there that leads into the barachois, a kind of half sea half land hybrid environment, and looked out on the world from there as if I were lying in wait for something and might leap out and pounce on it at any moment. But that something never appeared and after a while I was just sitting there, relaxed and at ease. I think it rather sums up my experience of meditation overall. We prowl around our world in search of something upon which we will seize and thereby justify our existence. And it just causes suffering, that kind of attitude, because it can only cause stress, because our existence needs no justification and in fact is diminished by those we conceptually introduce. So to realize we are lying in wait for nothing at all is a good meditation experience, the best, because therefore we can relax and just be.

In the distance you can just see the steeple of Prospect's deactivated church, which is a beautiful sight nevertheless.
