Breakfast at Hearns
Where can you have breakfast alone, enjoying solitude and a magnificent view, while still having plenty of company?
Not Tiffanys.
I was up early yesterday and, seeing calm water, overcame my morning laziness, gathered a few edibles and set out. The ocean early is so fresh that fresh scarcely describes it. You feel reborn, without stain, so pure that nagging thoughts find themselves facing a glass mountain they cannot ascend. There's one mooring off the sand beach at Hearn Island, and, since I had a reservation that didn't need to be made, I stopped there. My vegan spread included cherries, pumpkin seeds, a honey crisp apple, and a drink made from spicy tomato juice and distilled potatoes, a true breakfast of champions. As I was leisurely taking it from the outside to what is called the inside, a couple of boats passed. The larger took no notice of the rules of the road and passed at speed, rocking me with its wake, for which I honoured the ignorant captain with a one-finger salute. And then a kayaker came and we had a pleasant chat. And then I caught lunch. I didn't really expect fish to be there, but apparently the mackerel run has begun. And then I returned, vowing to resist the lassitude of age and continue to enjoy the possibilities of living by the sea.
