Syzygy Tide

The floating dock to which my boat Promenade is attached is hinged to the permanent dock. This is usually so that as the tide lowers I can walk down the attaching ramp (note the little crossbars on the ramp against slippage) to get to the boat and go out. However, lately we have had extraordinarily high tides. You can see that the permanent dock is underwater and the floating dock floating above it. Or, you can't see the permanent dock because it's underwater. In fact you can see that the water is lapping at what would be my feet if I was sitting there as I like to sometimes in the morning to have my coffee and greet the day.

Here is the explanation (which of course doesn't take climate change into consideration): "Approximately twice a month, around new moon and full moon when the Sun, Moon, and Earth form a line (a configuration known as a syzygy), the tidal force due to the Sun reinforces that due to the Moon. The tide's range is then at its maximum; this is called the spring tide. It is not named after the season, but, like that word, derives from the meaning "jump, burst forth, rise", as in a natural spring. Spring tides are sometimes referred to as syzygy tides."
