Romance for No Reason

You're not with anyone, it isn't Marseilles in springtime, hearts are not popping up everywhere like long-repressed flowers. You've gone to the Seaport Farmers Market here in Halifax. The tables inside the big warehouse space are full. You head outside where there are many empty chairs. You have your cappuccino and your purchases. You set the purchases down in their bag and the cappuccino on the wide arm of the chair. You don't think about anything in particular. The sun is sparkling on the harbour. The grain elevators are whispering. The ship across the way might have been painted there.

Somehow, for no good reason, there is so much romance in the air that tears rise up as if to make a joyful noise.
