Interruption

I was driving home from the grocery store, still in the parking lot, when the stop sign appeared in front of the bulldozed snow that had become an ice mountain. The sight interrupted my thoughts. Suddenly I heard my teacher saying,

"Interrupt your ordinary thinking, your ordinary way of getting things done. Think instead, I am doing this for all the beings who need to get it done."

The seagulls on top of the mountain agreed. "Yes," they said. "Think of us, please. Life is hard."

I had no idea what to do with all that. But I was happy to think of my teacher, with whom myself and the seagulls agreed. I could hear someone laughing. It might have been me. I could hear someone crying. It might have been me.
