Rock Island Runoff Late January
The glaciers scraped the islands down to the granite. Over time a thin cap of soil accumulated, and a thin growth of this and that in the soil. Rain runs off quickly, there being so little to retain it. As it runs off, it becomes tinted from the granite and the soil. In the winter, the runoff sometimes freezes. This is a close-up look at that, shot from my boat with a telephoto lens. I wasn't thinking about the story at that point, just the beauty (to me) of that little patch of coastal cliff.
