Passing Fancy

Her on a bench above a sea both near and far
suddenly turned and looked my way.
Had I called? On such a chill and windy day
the trail was empty otherwise.
Who else could she be waiting for?
I felt in her gaze

a searching, as if love might be
somewhere around, as if it might want to be
found in me. But who was I to her?
The waves against the rocks below
said quickly go and find the answer. But I was slow
and when I looked again, the bench was empty.
